A classic illustration by John Bauer from 1913, depicting a small boy meeting a large, shaggy troll in a dark forest.
John Bauer, a Swedish illustrator active during the early twentieth century, produced this work for the anthology Bland tomtar och troll (Among Gnomes and Trolls). His output is defined by a specific approach to Scandinavian folklore, where the natural world is imbued with a sense of quiet mystery. In this composition, a small, upright boy encounters a large, hunched troll in a dark, forest setting. The troll is rendered with shaggy, textured fur and a heavy sack, appearing as an extension of the earth itself. The boy, by contrast, is depicted with clean, simple lines, creating a visual tension between the human and the mythical.
Bauer utilised a muted, earthy palette dominated by olive greens, browns, and deep shadows to suggest the atmosphere of a Nordic woodland at dusk. His technique involves fine ink outlines filled with delicate watercolour washes, a method that allows for both precise detail in the figures and a soft, atmospheric quality in the background. The troll's form is exaggerated, with oversized feet and a bulbous nose, reflecting the artist's interest in the grotesque yet sympathetic nature of these creatures. The composition is balanced by the verticality of the boy and the horizontal, heavy mass of the troll, creating a narrative moment that feels suspended in time. This work captures the essence of Bauer's contribution to Swedish visual culture, where the boundary between the mundane and the supernatural is thin. The print offers a glimpse into the imaginative world of early twentieth-century fairy tale illustration, maintaining the original's subtle tonal shifts and precise linework.
