A Dutch Renaissance engraving depicting the triumph of Divine Grace over evil, symbolised by a central figure holding a mirror and crucifix.
This engraving by Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert, a Dutch humanist, engraver, and theologian, presents a complex allegorical scene. The central figure, representing Divine Grace, sits enthroned upon clouds. She holds a mirror in her right hand, a traditional symbol of self-knowledge, while her left hand supports a crucifix, signifying the source of her authority. Beneath her feet, she subdues a demonic figure, illustrating the triumph of divine mercy over evil.
The composition reflects the intellectual climate of the sixteenth-century Netherlands, where theological debates regarding salvation and human nature were common. Coornhert, who was known for his independent religious views and his work as a translator, often used his prints to communicate moral and philosophical ideas. The Latin inscription at the base, 'Preveniens dei misericordia efficit sui cognitionem', translates to 'The prevenient mercy of God brings about self-knowledge', which provides the conceptual framework for the image.
Technically, the work demonstrates the precision typical of Dutch engraving during this period. The artist employs varied hatching techniques to create volume in the drapery of the central figure and to define the musculature of the defeated demon. The contrast between the serene, upright posture of the allegorical figure and the contorted, prone position of the demon creates a clear visual hierarchy. The inclusion of the star-shaped ornament on the figure's chest and the crown further elevates her status as a celestial entity. This print serves as a clear example of how Northern Renaissance artists utilised classical and Christian iconography to articulate abstract theological concepts for a learned audience. The work remains a precise record of the intersection between humanist thought and religious imagery in the late sixteenth century.
