A study of rural life in Provence, capturing a herdsman and his goats near a village fountain through the lens of British Naturalism.
Henry Herbert La Thangue was a prominent member of the New English Art Club and a painter who spent much of his career documenting rural life in Provence. This work captures a quiet, daily scene in a village square, where a herdsman tends to his goats near a stone fountain. The composition relies on the interplay of light and shadow, a hallmark of La Thangue's approach to plein air painting. He often utilised a square-brush technique, which allowed him to apply paint in distinct, rhythmic strokes that suggest the texture of the cobblestones and the dappled sunlight filtering through the trees.
The palette is dominated by earthy tones, reflecting the sun-baked architecture and the dusty ground of the Mediterranean setting. La Thangue avoids the overly polished finish of academic painting, preferring instead to capture the immediate atmosphere of the scene. The goats are rendered with a focus on their movement and form, while the figure of the herdsman, carrying a small kid across his shoulders, provides a human element to the pastoral arrangement. The fountain serves as a structural anchor for the composition, drawing the eye toward the centre of the activity.
La Thangue's work from this period demonstrates his interest in the realities of agricultural labour and the specific quality of light found in Southern Europe. By focusing on the mundane aspects of village life, he provides a record of a way of existence that was increasingly rare even at the turn of the twentieth century. The painting avoids sentimentality, opting for a direct observation of the relationship between the animals and their keeper. This print captures the tactile quality of the original oil paint, preserving the artist's brushwork and the specific tonal balance that defines his mature style.
