A portrait study by Nicolae Vermont, capturing a woman in a yellow headscarf with expressive, loose brushwork on a raw cardboard ground.
Nicolae Vermont, a significant figure in Romanian art at the turn of the twentieth century, produced this study of a woman. The work demonstrates his characteristic approach to portraiture, which often focused on the human condition through direct observation. Vermont trained in Munich and later in Paris, where he absorbed the techniques of academic realism while maintaining an interest in the expressive potential of the brushstroke.
In this piece, the subject stands in a relaxed posture, her hand resting on her hip. The artist uses a limited palette, allowing the raw tone of the cardboard support to function as a mid-tone within the composition. The yellow headscarf provides a clear chromatic contrast against the darker, loosely applied background. Vermont employs a sketch-like application of paint, particularly in the rendering of the white skirt, where the texture of the cardboard remains visible beneath the pigment. This technique suggests a rapid execution, capturing the essence of the sitter rather than a polished, formal likeness.
Vermont was known for his depictions of everyday people, often choosing subjects from the margins of society. His work avoids sentimentality, opting instead for a grounded representation of his sitters. The figure is positioned centrally, with the background treated as a shadowy, atmospheric space that pushes the subject forward. The lack of detail in the feet and the lower portion of the skirt reinforces the impression of a study or a preparatory work. This print captures the immediacy of the original oil on cardboard, preserving the visible brushwork and the raw quality of the artist's process. It offers a view into the stylistic preferences of a painter who balanced traditional training with a modern, observational sensibility.
