David Cox was a leading figure in the English watercolour school. This work depicts a group of travellers camped on Dulwich Common, which was then a rural area on the outskirts of London. The composition features two makeshift shelters constructed from rough fabric and wooden poles. Several figures are gathered around the camp, engaged in daily activities. One woman hangs laundry over a wooden fence in the middle distance, while others sit or stand near the tents. The artist uses a palette of ochre and brown tones alongside muted green to describe the grassy terrain and surrounding foliage.
