A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Salomon Savery depicting the coastal settlement of Luanda, featuring maritime vessels and topographical labels.
This etching by Salomon Savery depicts the coastal settlement of Luanda as it appeared around 1641. The work represents the right half of a larger panoramic view, capturing the maritime activity and the topography of the shoreline. Savery, a Dutch engraver and publisher, produced this image to document the colonial presence in West Africa during the period of Dutch expansion.
The composition is divided between the expansive, textured surface of the water and the distant, elevated coastline. Two ships occupy the foreground, their rigging and hulls rendered with precise, thin lines characteristic of seventeenth-century etching techniques. The horizon line is kept low, allowing for a vast expanse of sky that balances the density of the harbour scene below.
In the upper left corner, a decorative cartouche features the inscription 'LOANDA S. PAULI', adorned with wings and military motifs. This element provides a sense of scale and formal structure to the print. Below the main image, a series of labels (G through M) identifies specific structures and locations, including fortifications and religious buildings. These annotations reflect the cartographic and observational nature of the work, which functioned as both a visual record and a navigational or colonial reference.
Savery’s work provides a clear view of the architectural layout of the town, with its low-slung buildings situated along the cliffside. The print is a technical example of the era's interest in documenting global geography through the medium of copperplate engraving. The monochromatic palette and the focus on linear detail allow the viewer to examine the maritime infrastructure and the strategic positioning of the settlement. This print is a valuable record of seventeenth-century maritime history and the visual documentation of colonial trade routes.
