A nineteenth-century stereoscopic photograph by Francis Frith, capturing a panoramic view of Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives.
This stereoscopic photograph captures a panoramic view of Jerusalem as seen from the Mount of Olives. Francis Frith, a prominent British photographer, produced this image during his extensive travels through the Middle East in the late 1850s. The composition features a foreground dominated by a solitary olive tree and a small stone structure, which provide a sense of scale against the sprawling city in the distance. The arched framing is characteristic of the stereoscopic format, designed to be viewed through a stereoscope to create an illusion of three-dimensional depth.
Frith utilised the wet collodion process, a demanding technique that required the photographer to coat, expose, and develop glass plates while on location. This method allowed for the high level of detail visible in the stone textures and the distant urban architecture. His work provided Victorian audiences with a direct visual connection to biblical sites, shaping contemporary perceptions of the region. The sepia tones are a result of the albumen printing process, which was the standard for commercial photography during the mid-nineteenth century.
This print reflects the technical precision Frith brought to his documentation of historical sites. By positioning his camera on the Mount of Olives, he chose a vantage point that had been popularised by earlier painters and travel writers. The image functions as a record of the city's topography before the significant urban expansion that occurred in the following decades. It remains a primary source for historians studying the development of travel photography and the visual documentation of the Holy Land.
