A seventeenth-century Dutch etching by Salomon Savery, depicting a character study of a man in profile.
This etching by Salomon Savery depicts a figure identified by the inscription 'Gerretje vuyl turf'. The work belongs to the tradition of Dutch genre prints, which often focused on the lives of common people, beggars, or itinerant characters. Savery, a printmaker active in Amsterdam, utilised a direct etching technique to capture the subject in profile, walking with a distinct, slightly hunched posture. The figure wears a simple, loose-fitting tunic and a hat adorned with a feather, suggesting a character from the lower social strata of the seventeenth-century Netherlands.
The line work is characteristic of the period, employing hatching to define the contours of the body and the folds of the clothing. The background is kept minimal, with only a faint suggestion of a building on the horizon, which directs the viewer's attention entirely to the figure. The inscription at the top provides a specific identity, linking the image to contemporary social types or perhaps a known local character. The number 12 in the lower corner indicates that this print was part of a larger series, likely a collection of character studies or costume plates common in the seventeenth century.
Savery's approach avoids idealisation. He presents the subject with a focus on the physical reality of the figure, from the pointed nose and scruffy beard to the awkward gait. This print offers a glimpse into the observational habits of Dutch artists, who frequently documented the variety of human types found in urban and rural settings. The paper retains the texture of the original plate marks, providing a clear view of the artist's hand and the technical process of etching. It is a piece that documents the social observation prevalent in the Dutch Golden Age, stripped of unnecessary ornamentation.
