Description
A serene triptych woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, capturing the tranquil coastal view of Kanazawa under the light of a full moon.
This triptych by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the coastal scenery of Kanazawa in the Musashi Province under the light of a full moon. As a master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, Hiroshige utilises the woodblock medium to capture the atmospheric quality of the Japanese night. The composition is divided into three vertical panels, which together present an expansive view of the bay, the narrow land bridge, and the distant mountain range. The colour palette relies on subtle gradations of blue, known as bokashi, to represent the transition from the night sky to the water. The moon, a pale circular form, provides the primary light source, casting a soft glow over the scene. Small boats are scattered across the water, their white sails providing contrast against the darker tones of the sea. The landmasses are rendered with simplified forms, emphasising the horizontal lines of the geography. Pine trees, a recurring motif in Hiroshige's work, are positioned in the foreground and along the land bridge, adding texture to the composition. This work belongs to the genre of meisho-e, or pictures of famous places. Hiroshige was known for his ability to imbue these locations with a sense of quietude and specific temporal conditions. The print demonstrates his technical skill in layering colours and managing the registration of the woodblocks to create a cohesive image across the three sheets. The absence of heavy outlines in the sky allows for a smooth transition of colour, which was a hallmark of his later career. The print remains a representative example of the aesthetic priorities of the Edo period, where the observation of nature and the depiction of regional beauty were central to the artistic output of the time.
