Description

A serene woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting cherry blossoms at Arashiyama. It features raftsmen on the Oi River and travellers on a riverside path.

This woodblock print belongs to the series Famous Places in Kyoto (Kyoto meisho no uchi), produced by Utagawa Hiroshige around 1834. It depicts the Arashiyama district, a location west of Kyoto known for its seasonal beauty. The composition focuses on the Oi River as it flows past hillsides covered in cherry blossoms. Hiroshige uses a diagonal arrangement to guide the eye from the figures on the left bank toward the wide expanse of water on the right. This series was published by Kawaguchiya Shozo and represents one of the artist's early successes in the landscape genre. In the foreground, two men navigate a timber raft down the river. A small fire burns on the raft, sending a thin trail of smoke into the air. This detail provides a sense of daily labour amidst the scenic surroundings. On the left, a winding yellow path follows the riverbank. Several figures walk along this trail, appearing small against the large pine trees and flowering cherry branches. The blossoms are rendered in soft pinks and whites, contrasting with the deep blue of the river. The artist includes small dots of white to represent falling petals on the water surface. The print employs the bokashi technique, a method of hand-applying ink to the woodblock to create gradations of colour. This is visible in the darkening blue of the water and the soft transitions in the sky. Hiroshige was a master of the landscape genre within the ukiyo-e tradition. His work often captured the atmospheric qualities of specific locations and weather conditions. This particular scene records the spring season, a time of significant cultural interest in Japan. The use of Prussian blue, a pigment that had recently become more available, is evident in the river. This work is a representative example of Hiroshige's ability to balance human activity with the natural environment.
