A precise engraving fragment by Dutch artist Pieter Dupont, showcasing the technical skill and ornamental style of turn-of-the-century banknote design.
This print displays a fragment of a twenty-five gulden banknote design by the Dutch artist and engraver Pieter Dupont. Known for his technical precision, Dupont was a significant figure in the revival of the graphic arts in the Netherlands at the turn of the twentieth century. The composition features the number twenty-five enclosed within a circular frame, surrounded by dense, flowing acanthus-style ornamentation typical of the period.
The work demonstrates the rigorous discipline required for currency design, where security and aesthetic form meet. The lines are executed with extreme control, creating a sense of depth through varied hatching and cross-hatching techniques. The surrounding scrollwork exhibits the characteristic fluidity of Art Nouveau, yet maintains the structural clarity necessary for a functional financial document. The presence of the plate mark and the artist's initials in the lower margin suggests this is a proof or a study pulled from the original copper plate.
Dupont, who served as a professor at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, influenced a generation of Dutch printmakers. His approach to the medium was rooted in a deep understanding of the physical properties of the metal plate. This specific fragment provides a view into the meticulous process of banknote production, where every curve and shadow serves a dual purpose of artistic expression and anti-counterfeiting measure. The stark contrast between the white paper and the black ink emphasises the clarity of the engraving, allowing the viewer to appreciate the technical skill involved in such a small-scale, high-density composition. It is a piece that appeals to those interested in the history of graphic design, currency, and the intersection of industrial utility with fine art printmaking.
