A series of four classical allegorical panels by Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, originally commissioned as signage for a nineteenth-century Viennese pharmacy.
This series of four vertical panels was commissioned as shop signs for The Golden Lion pharmacy in the Josefstadt district of Vienna. Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, a central figure in Austrian Biedermeier painting, demonstrates his technical precision and command of classical iconography in these works. Each panel depicts a figure associated with the history of medicine and natural history: Hygieia, the goddess of health; Hippocrates, the father of medicine; Galen, the influential physician; and a personification of Fauna.
The figures are rendered with a clarity typical of Waldmüller's early career. He employs a controlled palette and precise brushwork to define the drapery of the classical robes, which range from deep blues to earthy greens and ochres. The compositions are balanced, placing each figure within a setting that suggests their specific domain, whether it be the botanical focus of the apothecary or the scholarly environment of the ancient physician. The vertical orientation of the panels reflects their original purpose as architectural elements, designed to be viewed as a cohesive set.
Waldmüller is often associated with his later, more naturalistic depictions of rural life, yet these signs reveal his grounding in the academic tradition. The attention to anatomical detail and the careful arrangement of the figures show his ability to adapt his style to decorative commissions. The works provide a glimpse into the commercial culture of early nineteenth-century Vienna, where even functional shop signage was expected to adhere to high artistic standards. By integrating mythological and historical figures into the identity of a local business, the pharmacy aligned itself with the intellectual heritage of the medical profession. These prints offer a reproduction of the original panels, maintaining the proportions and tonal qualities of the artist's work.
