Description
A monochromatic study in texture and light, this work by Herbert Zangs uses folded canvas to create a rhythmic, three-dimensional grid.
Herbert Zangs is recognised for his systematic approach to the physical properties of his materials. This work belongs to his series of 'Verfaltungen', or foldings, which he began in the 1950s. By manipulating the surface of the canvas through deliberate creasing and folding, Zangs moves away from traditional representational painting. He focuses instead on the interplay between light and shadow created by the physical relief of the material itself. The monochromatic white surface serves to neutralise the distraction of colour, allowing the viewer to concentrate on the structural rhythm of the grid. The folds create a tactile, three-dimensional quality that changes depending on the angle of illumination. This technique reflects the broader interests of the Zero movement, which sought to strip art back to its most basic elements of light, space, and movement. Zangs rejects the notion of the artist as a creator of illusions, preferring to present the object as a direct, unmediated reality. In this piece, the grid pattern provides a sense of order, yet the organic nature of the fabric ensures that each crease remains unique. The result is a work that occupies the space between painting and sculpture. It invites a quiet observation of texture and form, where the absence of pigment becomes a deliberate choice. Zangs's work remains a significant example of post-war European abstraction, demonstrating a rigorous dedication to the material essence of the canvas.
