A sun-drenched portrait by American Impressionist Guy Rose, capturing a woman at a table with roses and tea service.
Five O'Clock, painted by Guy Rose around 1910, captures a quiet moment of domestic leisure. The composition features a woman seated at a table, her attention directed away from the viewer toward the right side of the frame. A glass vase filled with red roses occupies the centre of the table, flanked by a patterned teapot and a small creamer. Two pears rest on a plate, adding a still-life element to the scene. The table is covered in a blue cloth, which provides a cool contrast to the warm, golden light that permeates the background.
Rose, a significant figure in California Impressionism, spent many years in Giverny, France, where he worked in close proximity to Claude Monet. This experience is evident in his handling of light and colour. The background is rendered with loose, broken brushstrokes that suggest dappled sunlight filtering through foliage. The artist employs a high-key palette, favouring bright yellows and whites to create an atmosphere of warmth and ease. The woman's white garment reflects the surrounding light, further unifying the figure with the environment.
The painting demonstrates the artist's interest in the interplay between indoor and outdoor spaces. While the setting is clearly domestic, the light quality suggests an open-air or sun-drenched porch environment. The brushwork remains visible throughout the canvas, particularly in the treatment of the tablecloth and the background, which aligns with the Impressionist focus on capturing the fleeting effects of light. This work reflects the artist's technical proficiency and his ability to elevate a mundane afternoon ritual into a study of colour and atmosphere.
