An intricate seventeenth-century engraving by Aegidius Sadeler II, depicting the seasonal activities and social customs associated with the month of February.
This engraving by Aegidius Sadeler II, a prominent member of the Sadeler family of engravers, depicts the month of February through the lens of seasonal activities and social customs. The composition is divided between a foreground gathering of figures engaged in revelry and a background view of a town square. The scene captures the atmosphere of late winter, with bare trees and a low sun suggesting the transition towards spring.
Sadeler, who spent much of his career in Prague under the patronage of Emperor Rudolf II, demonstrates his technical proficiency through the use of varied hatching and cross-hatching to define form and texture. The foreground is crowded with figures, some drinking and socialising, while others appear to be involved in the preparations for a festival. A small cart and various domestic items are scattered throughout, adding to the sense of a busy, lived-in environment. In the sky, a pair of fish serves as a symbolic reference to the zodiac sign of Pisces, which corresponds to the month of February.
The background reveals a detailed urban setting, with buildings and smaller figures moving across the open space. This juxtaposition of intimate foreground action and expansive background architecture is characteristic of the period's approach to printmaking. The work functions as a visual record of contemporary life, reflecting the social habits and seasonal rhythms of the early seventeenth century. The inclusion of Latin text at the base provides a moralising or descriptive commentary, a common feature in prints of this era intended for a learned audience. Through his precise line work, Sadeler creates a narrative that balances the mundane aspects of daily life with the symbolic markers of the calendar year.
