A study of the Norfolk Broads by Henry Herbert La Thangue, capturing the quiet atmosphere of the East Anglian countryside through loose, expressive brushwork.
Henry Herbert La Thangue was a member of the New English Art Club, a group that sought to bring the influence of French plein-air painting to British soil. This work depicts the flat, expansive terrain of the Norfolk Broads, a region that provided the artist with ample subject matter for his studies of light and atmosphere. The composition is divided horizontally, with the majority of the frame occupied by the textured, golden-green grasses of the foreground. The brushwork here is loose and gestural, capturing the tactile quality of the meadow rather than rendering individual blades of grass.
In the distance, a line of farm buildings sits against a pale, overcast sky. La Thangue uses a muted palette to convey the specific quality of light found in the East Anglian countryside. The buildings are reduced to simple, dark silhouettes, providing a sense of scale and distance to the otherwise open field. By focusing on the interplay between the foreground textures and the distant horizon, the artist creates a sense of quiet observation. This piece reflects the broader interest among late nineteenth-century painters in capturing the authentic character of rural life, moving away from the highly polished academic styles of the era. The work is signed by the artist in the lower left corner, consistent with his practice of marking his smaller, direct studies from nature. It remains a clear example of his ability to distil a scene into its essential components of colour and tone, prioritising the immediate visual experience of the Norfolk environment over narrative detail.
