Albrecht Altdorfer (c. 1480-1538) was a German painter, engraver and architect of the Renaissance. He is considered one of the main representatives of the Danube School, which favored atmospheric settings and expressive colour over classical forms. Altdorfer worked for Emperor Maximilian I in Augsburg and was also active in his hometown of Regensburg, where he served on the city council. His work includes paintings, drawings, engravings, and woodcuts, often depicting religious or mythological subjects. He is known for his innovative compositions and his interest in nature. 'Expulsion from Paradise' depicts the moment when Adam and Eve are banished from the Garden of Eden. An angel with a sword drives the couple out of the idyllic setting. Artist Biography
Albrecht Altdorfer
He was born around 1480, probably in Regensburg, and became a citizen in 1505. He is credited with painting one of the first pure landscapes in oil with no human figures, Landscape with Footbridge (c. 1518 to 1520), a step that no European painter had taken since antiquity. He died in Regensburg in 1538.
