Description
A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting a steady evening rain falling over the Great Pine at Karasaki on the shores of Lake Biwa.
Evening Rain at Karasaki is a woodblock print from the series Eight Views of Omi. This series adapted a traditional Chinese poetic theme to the scenery surrounding Lake Biwa in Japan. Hiroshige produced several versions of this series, but this specific composition is from the Hoeido edition, which is often considered his most successful interpretation of the subject.
The composition is dominated by the Great Pine of Karasaki. This ancient tree was a famous landmark on the western shore of Lake Biwa. Hiroshige uses fine vertical lines to represent a steady downpour. The dark grey and blue tones suggest the dim light of evening. The artist employs a technique called bokashi, which is a gradated application of ink. This is visible in the darkening sky at the top of the print.
The use of Prussian blue is characteristic of Hiroshige's work from this period. Small details include the stone walls of the shrine and the masts of boats moored nearby. The print captures a specific atmospheric moment through the repetition of line and the careful control of colour values. It is a significant example of the meisho-e genre, which focused on famous places in the Japanese countryside.
