A 1526 woodcut portrait of Mary of Hungary, featuring heraldic details and historical text, produced by Flemish printmaker Sylvester van Parijs.
This woodcut, produced in Antwerp in 1526, depicts Mary of Hungary, the sister of Emperor Charles V and Queen consort of Hungary and Bohemia. The print is a characteristic example of early sixteenth-century Flemish graphic art, combining portraiture with heraldic elements and extensive descriptive text. The figure stands in a formal, upright posture, wearing a dark, fur-trimmed mantle and a simple head covering, which reflects the modest yet authoritative fashion of the period.
The composition is structured around the central figure, with the coat of arms positioned in the upper left corner to denote her royal lineage. The text block at the top provides a detailed account of her titles and her role as regent in the Netherlands, alongside a reference to the Battle of Mohács. The print is finished with hand-applied colour, which adds a subtle warmth to the heraldic shield and the base upon which the figure stands.
Sylvester van Parijs, working from his shop at the Cammerpoort in Antwerp, utilised the woodcut medium to disseminate images of European royalty to a wider audience. The lines are clear and functional, prioritising the legibility of the subject and the accompanying historical information. This work offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the Habsburg Netherlands, where printed portraits functioned as both political propaganda and historical record. The print remains a valuable document for those interested in the costume, heraldry, and political history of the early modern period.
