A fine etching by Francis Seymour Haden from 1881, depicting two donkeys in a wooded rural setting with atmospheric weather effects.
Francis Seymour Haden, a surgeon by profession and a central figure in the nineteenth-century Etching Revival, produced this work in 1881. The print captures a rural scene with a characteristic economy of line. Haden favoured the directness of the etching needle, often working outdoors to capture the immediate atmosphere of the British countryside.
In this composition, two donkeys stand near a pool of water in the foreground, positioned against a backdrop of dense, textured woodland. Haden employs varied line weights to define the foliage and the rolling terrain. The sky is rendered with swift, diagonal strokes that suggest a passing shower or shifting weather conditions, a common interest for artists associated with the Etching Revival who sought to elevate the medium beyond mere reproductive utility.
The work demonstrates Haden's technical proficiency, particularly in his use of drypoint to add depth to the darker areas of the woods and the reflections in the water. The composition is balanced, with the animals providing a sense of scale and quietude. Haden was instrumental in promoting the idea that etching was a painterly medium, capable of expressing the artist's personal vision rather than simply copying paintings. His approach to the plate was spontaneous, often leaving areas of the paper blank to suggest light and space. This print reflects his preference for natural subjects and his ability to convey the character of the English environment through minimal, expressive marks. The signature and date are clearly visible in the lower left, confirming the provenance of this specific impression.
