Description
A serene triptych woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, depicting the coastal beauty of Kanazawa under moonlight.
Utagawa Hiroshige, a master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, produced this triptych during the final years of his career. The composition captures the coastal scenery of Kanazawa under the soft illumination of a full moon. The print demonstrates Hiroshige's mastery of atmospheric perspective, using subtle gradations of blue and grey to suggest the depth of the bay and the distance of the mountains. The scene is structured across three panels, which together form a panoramic view of the shoreline. Small boats are scattered across the water, providing a sense of scale against the larger landmasses. The foreground features pine trees rendered with characteristic precision, while the middle ground is dominated by the curving peninsula that defines the geography of the region. The sky occupies a significant portion of the upper composition, rendered in a muted tone that allows the moon to serve as the primary light source for the entire scene. Technically, the print relies on the precise registration of multiple woodblocks to achieve the layered colour effects. The use of 'bokashi', or colour gradation, is evident in the water and the sky, creating a smooth transition between light and shadow. This work belongs to the genre of 'meisho-e', or pictures of famous places, which gained popularity in the Edo period as travel became more accessible to the public. Hiroshige's approach to this subject avoids excessive detail, opting instead for a balanced arrangement of natural elements that convey a sense of quietude. The print remains a representative example of the artist's late style, where he moved towards more expansive, atmospheric compositions that influenced later generations of artists both in Japan and abroad.
