Traditionally, households would decorate their eaves with iris leaves to ward off misfortune and promote health. The artist employs a minimalist approach, focusing on the architectural detail of a thatched roof corner and the subtle placement of iris foliage beneath the eaves.
Kikuchi Yōsai, known for his historical paintings and his work on the Zenken Kojitsu, demonstrates here a mastery of the wash technique. The ink application is restrained, allowing the silk support to provide the primary tone of the composition.
