A dynamic abstract composition by Romanian artist Romul Nutiu, featuring swirling oil paint textures in red, blue, and black.
Romul Nutiu was a Romanian painter known for his exploration of fluid dynamics and non-representational forms. His work often involves the manipulation of paint to create swirling, organic patterns that suggest motion and energy. In this piece, the application of oil paint results in marbled textures where colours bleed into one another, creating a sense of depth without traditional perspective.
The composition relies on the interaction between primary and secondary hues. Deep reds dominate the visual field, contrasted against streaks of blue and grey. The black areas provide a grounding element, allowing the lighter pigments to appear as if they are suspended in a viscous medium. Nutiu often utilised techniques that allowed gravity and the physical properties of the paint to dictate the final outcome, rather than relying on controlled brushwork.
This approach aligns with the broader traditions of mid-twentieth-century abstraction, where the physical act of painting and the material qualities of the pigment take precedence over figurative representation. The lack of a clear horizon or subject matter encourages the viewer to focus on the interplay of texture and tone. The surface appears tactile, with the layered paint creating a sense of physical weight. By removing the constraints of representational imagery, Nutiu invites an engagement with the raw properties of the medium itself. This print captures the fluid nature of the original oil application, maintaining the visual tension between the chaotic movement of the colours and the structured boundaries of the canvas. It is a study in the balance of chance and intentionality, characteristic of the artist's later period.
