A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga, depicting figures relaxing on a veranda in the Hakone region during the 1780s.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga belongs to the series Seven Noted Hot Springs in Hakone, produced during the mid-1780s. Kiyonaga is recognised for his tall, graceful figures, a stylistic shift from the more compact proportions favoured by his predecessors. In this composition, three figures occupy a wooden veranda overlooking a stream. The scene captures a moment of leisure, with one figure smoking a pipe while the others engage in quiet conversation. The architectural elements, such as the bamboo railings and the open structure of the building, provide a sense of spatial depth, while the distant hills are rendered with minimal detail to maintain focus on the foreground subjects.
The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Ukiyo-e tradition, utilising a refined colour palette that relies on soft earth tones and muted reds. Kiyonaga was a master of the bijin-ga genre, which focused on the depiction of beautiful women. His work often placed these figures within natural or architectural settings, creating a balance between the human form and the environment. The composition is structured to lead the eye across the veranda, connecting the seated figures with the standing woman who adjusts her hair. The inclusion of tea service items and personal accessories adds a layer of domestic realism to the scene. This print reflects the aesthetic values of the Edo period, where the depiction of travel and leisure spots became a popular subject for the urban public. The clean lines and balanced arrangement of the figures are characteristic of Kiyonaga's mature style, which prioritised clarity and elegance in the representation of daily life.
