A spontaneous ink drawing by Dutch artist Lucebert, featuring a fantastical creature rendered with fluid, expressive lines.
Lucebert, born Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk, was a central figure in the Dutch post-war avant-garde. As a poet and painter, his work often rejects traditional aesthetics in favour of a raw, spontaneous approach. This drawing, titled Dier met vijf benen (Animal with Five Legs), captures his characteristic style of distorted, creature-like forms rendered with fluid, calligraphic ink lines.
The image presents a fantastical beast, its anatomy intentionally subverted to include an extra limb. The line work is economical yet expressive, showing the influence of the CoBrA movement, which prioritised child-like spontaneity and uninhibited creativity over academic precision. The creature appears to move across a simple, diagonal ground line, suggesting a sense of motion despite the static nature of the medium. The ink application varies between thin, precise contours and thicker, darker washes that define the creature's head and ears.
Lucebert's practice was deeply connected to his literary work, where he sought to break down linguistic and visual conventions. In this piece, the subject is not a literal representation of a biological animal, but rather a projection of internal imagery. The signature and date, 10 juli 63, are integrated into the composition, reinforcing the immediacy of the creative act. The work is devoid of background detail, focusing the viewer entirely on the strange, kinetic form of the animal. This piece offers a glimpse into the artist's ability to transform simple materials into a complex, imaginative statement. It remains a clear example of his rejection of formal constraints, favouring a direct, emotive connection between the artist's hand and the paper surface.
