A nineteenth-century albumen print by Giorgio Sommer, documenting a classical Pompeian fresco depicting the myth of Diana and Actaeon.
This albumen print by Giorgio Sommer captures a classical mythological scene, specifically the encounter between the goddess Diana and the hunter Actaeon. The image is a photographic reproduction of a print, which itself was based on a wall painting discovered in the ruins of Pompeii. Sommer, a German photographer based in Naples, documented the archaeological treasures of the region during the nineteenth century. His work provided European audiences with access to the visual culture of antiquity.
The composition depicts Diana bathing in a grotto, surprised by Actaeon, who is accompanied by his hunting dogs. The scene follows the traditional narrative from Ovid's Metamorphoses, where the hunter is punished for witnessing the goddess in her private state. The framing of the photograph includes decorative elements, such as flanking figures on pedestals and ornamental borders, which mimic the presentation style of nineteenth-century museum catalogues or archaeological portfolios. The stark contrast between the light figures and the dark background is characteristic of the photographic techniques employed to document monochromatic frescoes and engravings of the period.
Sommer operated a prolific studio in Naples, producing extensive series of photographs that documented both the landscape and the antiquities of Southern Italy. His technical approach allowed for the preservation of fine detail in the original frescoes, which were often fading or fragile. This print serves as a record of how classical art was interpreted and disseminated through the medium of photography during the Victorian era. It reflects the period's fascination with the rediscovery of Roman life and the systematic documentation of archaeological sites.
