A detailed wood engraving by Adrian Ludwig Richter from the 1853 Goethe Album, depicting the legendary rat catcher amongst townspeople.
This wood engraving, titled Der Rattenfanger, originates from the 1853 Goethe Album published in Leipzig. Adrian Ludwig Richter, a central figure in German Romantic and Biedermeier art, produced this work to accompany the literary output of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The scene depicts the legendary figure of the rat catcher, a character rooted in German folklore, as he interacts with the inhabitants of a small town. Richter employs a precise, linear style characteristic of mid-nineteenth-century book illustration, focusing on the narrative clarity of the figures and their domestic surroundings.
The composition centres on the musician, who stands with his instrument, surrounded by villagers and children. Richter captures the social dynamics of the scene through the varied postures and expressions of the onlookers. The architectural details, such as the timber-framed house and the dovecote, provide a sense of place that aligns with the Biedermeier interest in local, everyday life. The artist uses fine, controlled lines to define textures, from the folds of the villagers' clothing to the rough surfaces of the wooden structures.
Richter was highly regarded for his ability to translate literary themes into visual form. His work for the Goethe Album demonstrates a technical proficiency in wood engraving, a medium that allowed for mass reproduction in the nineteenth century. The inclusion of the original German text beneath the image maintains the integrity of the piece as a page from a published volume. This print offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the period, where literature and art were closely linked through the medium of the illustrated book. The work remains a clear example of the narrative focus and technical discipline that defined Richter's career as an illustrator and painter of German life.
