A romantic illustration by Sergey Solomko, depicting a couple in traditional Russian dress in a quiet, atmospheric setting.
Sergey Solomko, a Russian artist who spent much of his career in Paris, produced a vast body of work for postcards and book illustrations during the early twentieth century. This piece, titled Declaration of Love, captures a quiet, intimate moment between two figures dressed in stylised, historical Russian attire. The woman wears a traditional kokoshnik, rendered with delicate attention to decorative detail, while the man leans in with a gentle, focused posture. A small dog sits at their feet, grounding the scene in a sense of domestic calm.
The composition is notable for its generous use of negative space. The vast, pale sky occupies the upper two-thirds of the frame, creating an atmospheric void that directs the viewer's attention to the figures below. A single bird in the upper left corner provides a subtle point of interest, balancing the weight of the figures. Solomko employs a soft, muted palette, relying on pastel tones and gentle washes to convey the mood of the encounter. His technique reflects the influence of the Art Nouveau movement, particularly in the fluid lines of the clothing and the decorative treatment of the fabric patterns.
Solomko was highly regarded for his ability to blend historical romanticism with the aesthetic sensibilities of his time. His work often featured themes of courtship, folklore, and aristocratic life, presented with a refined, illustrative quality. This print captures the characteristic elegance of his style, offering a glimpse into the romanticised vision of Russian heritage that was popular in European artistic circles during the pre-war period. The work remains a fine example of the intersection between commercial illustration and fine art practice at the turn of the century.
