A 1555 engraving by Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert depicting women engaged in spinning, a traditional allegory of virtue and industry.
This engraving, dated 1555, depicts a domestic scene centred on the act of spinning, a traditional symbol of feminine virtue and industry in Northern Renaissance art. Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert, a Dutch polymath and engraver, presents a group of women engaged in various stages of textile production. The central figure sits with a distaff and spindle, her posture composed and focused, while others operate a spinning wheel or attend to related tasks. The composition is structured to emphasise the collective nature of this labour, with figures arranged in a shallow, stage-like space that allows for clear observation of their movements and tools.
The print reflects the moralising tone common in sixteenth-century Dutch art, where daily activities were frequently used to convey didactic messages about character and social duty. The inclusion of text at the bottom provides a scriptural or moral context, linking the scene to the idealised portrait of the virtuous woman found in the Book of Proverbs. The technical execution demonstrates the precision characteristic of Coornhert's work, with fine hatching used to model the folds of the garments and the textures of the wool and wooden equipment. The lighting is even, casting soft shadows that define the forms without creating dramatic contrast. This work offers a glimpse into the domestic life of the period, elevated by its allegorical intent and careful attention to the tools of the trade. It is a document of both historical textile practices and the cultural values of the Dutch Renaissance.
