Description
A Flemish Baroque history painting by David Teniers the Younger. It depicts the military commander David Antonio Manocada on a white horse, surrounded by a decorative trompe l'oeil border.
David Teniers the Younger produced this work as part of a series documenting the life of the Spanish general David Antonio Manocada. While Teniers is most famous for his genre scenes of peasant life, he also worked as the court painter to Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, the Governor of the Spanish Netherlands. This position required him to execute formal history paintings and portraits that celebrated the military successes of the Habsburg administration.
The composition features Manocada mounted on a white charger in the foreground. He wears black plate armour and a helmet with a large red plume, gesturing with a sword toward the battle unfolding in the distance. His troops follow behind him, carrying pikes and banners. The background depicts a skirmish outside the walls of a fortified city, rendered with the atmospheric perspective typical of Flemish painting.
A specific feature of this work is the painted frame. Teniers uses a trompe l'oeil technique to create an ornamental border. This border includes garlands of fruit and flowers at the top, while the bottom and sides are decorated with military trophies, including drums, shields, and various armour. Two coats of arms are positioned at the top and bottom centres, identifying the noble lineage of the subject. The use of copper as a support allowed Teniers to achieve a high level of detail and a smooth surface finish.
The series was commissioned by Francisco de Moncada, the 3rd Marquis of Aytona, who served as the commander-in-chief of the Spanish forces in the Netherlands. Teniers based these compositions on earlier designs, adapting them to his own style which favoured clear light and precise brushwork. The narrative focuses on the relief of the siege of a city, where the tactical leadership of Manocada is the primary subject. The preservation of the colours is due to the non-absorbent nature of the copper, which prevents the oil from sinking and dulling over time.
