Description
Cuween Hill Chambered Cairn makes an Orkney history connection feel wonderfully tangible, with a modest entrance offering a close point of discovery above the broad fields and water beyond.
A dark mesh gate with diagonal bracing fills the low rectangular opening. Thin pale slabs form its lintel and side walls, tucked within thick green turf. Farther away, orange roofed houses sit among hedged fields, below blue coastal channels and long low hills.
Near Finstown, Cuween Hill Chambered Cairn keeps its external presence small within the open island setting. The short approach gives the entrance a directness that contrasts with the expansive outlook behind it. An interest in Orkney's older places can find its anchor in that change of scale, from the near stonework to the much wider shore visible beyond.
