A woodblock print by Ohara Koson depicting a crow perched on a snow-covered branch. The stark black bird contrasts against a soft orange background, capturing a fleeting moment in nature.
Ohara Koson (1877-1945) was a Japanese artist renowned for his woodblock prints of birds and flowers (kacho-e). He initially trained in traditional Japanese painting, but later transitioned to printmaking, becoming a leading figure in the Shin-Hanga movement, which aimed to revitalise traditional ukiyo-e art for a Western audience. Koson's work often depicts birds in their natural habitats, rendered with careful observation and a refined sense of design. His prints were popular both in Japan and abroad, contributing to the international appreciation of Japanese art. In this print, a crow is perched on a snow-laden branch. The bird, rendered in stark black, contrasts against the soft orange background. The snow is depicted with delicate white lines, suggesting its ephemeral quality. The composition is simple yet effective, capturing a fleeting moment in nature. Koson's skill in capturing the essence of his subjects is evident in the lifelike depiction of the crow, with its alert posture and detailed plumage. The print exemplifies the Shin-Hanga aesthetic, blending traditional Japanese techniques with Western influences.
