A painterly study by Denman Waldo Ross, capturing the dynamic equestrian portrait of the Count-Duke of Olivares after the original by Diego Velázquez.
This work is a study by the American painter and art theorist Denman Waldo Ross, based on the famous equestrian portrait of Gaspar de Guzmán, Count-Duke of Olivares, by Diego Velázquez. Ross, who was deeply involved in the study of colour theory and design at Harvard University, produced this copy to engage with the technical mastery of the Spanish Golden Age. The painting captures the dynamic energy of the original composition, showing the Count-Duke mounted on a rearing horse, his body turned to face the viewer while his hand gestures towards an unseen horizon.
Ross employs a painterly technique that prioritises the movement of the horse and the texture of the subject's armour. The brushwork is loose and expressive, reflecting the influence of Velázquez’s later style, which Ross admired for its economy of form and atmospheric quality. The palette consists of earthy browns, muted greens, and deep ochres, which ground the figure within a stormy, atmospheric sky. The composition relies on the diagonal tension created by the horse’s posture, balanced by the vertical presence of the tree on the right side of the frame.
As a scholar of art, Ross used such copies to analyse the structural principles of historical masterpieces. This piece provides a window into the pedagogical practices of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, where direct engagement with the works of Old Masters was a standard method for developing one's own visual language. The print retains the tactile quality of the original oil paint, allowing for a close examination of the brushwork and the artist's interpretation of light and shadow. It is a piece that speaks to the dialogue between historical tradition and the analytical approach of a modern art educator.
