Description
A late fourteenth-century Italian panel painting depicting the Coronation of the Virgin, rendered in tempera and gold leaf.
This work depicts the Coronation of the Virgin, a subject common in fourteenth-century Italian art. The Master of the Orcagnesque Misericordia, an anonymous Florentine painter active during the late Gothic period, employs the traditional hierarchical composition of the era. Christ sits upon a throne, placing a crown upon the head of the Virgin Mary. Both figures are surrounded by a celestial court of saints and angels, arranged in a symmetrical fashion that emphasises their divine status. The use of gold leaf is a defining feature of this panel. It covers the background and the halos, creating a reflective surface that suggests a heavenly realm beyond the physical world. The figures are rendered with the characteristic linear grace of the period, featuring elongated proportions and refined facial features. The drapery of their garments is depicted with soft, flowing folds, adding a sense of volume to the otherwise flat, decorative composition. At the base of the throne, two angels kneel, playing musical instruments to accompany the solemn event. The palette consists of muted reds, blues, and ochres, which contrast with the brilliance of the gold. This piece reflects the stylistic influence of Andrea Orcagna, from whom the artist derives their name. The focus is on the symbolic representation of the event rather than a realistic depiction of space. The panel retains the arched top typical of altarpieces from this time, designed to fit within a larger architectural frame. This print captures the delicate brushwork and the luminosity of the original tempera application, offering a clear view of the decorative patterns found in the textiles and the halos of the figures.
