Description
A figurative work by Jacques Villon titled 'Comedy of Society' depicts three women in fashionable attire, seated in an interior setting. The composition is characterised by its soft, muted colour palette and the use of simplified forms.
Jacques Villon, born Gaston Émile Duchamp, was a French Cubist and abstract painter, also a printmaker. He was the brother of artists Marcel Duchamp and Suzanne Duchamp-Crotti. Villon adopted his pseudonym in homage to the poet François Villon. He developed a style that combined elements of Cubism with a lighter, more decorative approach. 'Comedy of Society' depicts three women in fashionable attire, seated in what appears to be an interior setting. The composition is characterised by its soft, muted colour palette and the use of simplified forms. The figures are rendered with loose brushwork, giving the scene a sense of movement and spontaneity. The overall effect is one of understated elegance and sophistication, typical of the Belle Époque era.
