A striking Nabis-style composition by Georges Lacombe, depicting the rugged Brittany coastline through simplified forms and bold, non-naturalistic colour.
Georges Lacombe, a member of the Nabis group, produced this work during his time in Brittany. The Nabis sought to move beyond the literal representation of nature, favouring instead a synthesis of memory and emotion. In this composition, the rugged coastline of Camaret is reduced to bold, simplified forms and flat areas of colour. The towering cliffs frame the sea, creating a narrow vertical passage that draws the eye towards the horizon.
The palette is deliberately non-naturalistic. Deep, dark tones define the rock faces, while the water and sky are rendered in muted, almost ethereal shades. The contrast between the heavy, shadowed cliffs and the lighter, churning water below creates a sense of tension. Lacombe employs a decorative approach, where the shapes of the rocks and the patterns of the waves are treated as graphic elements rather than realistic textures. This stylistic choice reflects the influence of Japanese woodblock prints, which were widely admired by the Nabis for their economy of line and flattened perspective.
Lacombe often spent his summers in Brittany, finding inspiration in the harsh, elemental beauty of the region. His work from this period frequently explores the relationship between the human psyche and the natural world. By stripping away unnecessary detail, he invites the viewer to focus on the essential structure of the scene. The result is a quiet, meditative image that prioritises mood over topographical accuracy. This print captures the specific aesthetic of the Nabis, where the artist's subjective experience of the environment takes precedence over objective observation. It remains a clear example of the movement's interest in decorative synthesis and the expressive potential of colour.
