Description
Benjamin West's "Cleombrotus Ordered into Banishment by Leonidas II, King of Sparta" captures a dramatic moment from ancient Spartan history. The painting depicts Cleombrotus's banishment, surrounded by his grieving family.
Benjamin West's painting depicts a scene from ancient Spartan history. Cleombrotus, a Spartan king, is being ordered into banishment by Leonidas II. The composition is divided into two distinct groups. On the left, Leonidas II stands with soldiers, their faces stern and resolute. Cleombrotus sits on the right, surrounded by his grieving family, including his wife Chilonis, who pleads for his safety. The architecture in the background suggests a grand, classical setting, with imposing columns and archways. The figures are rendered in a Neoclassical style, with careful attention to anatomy and drapery. The palette is restrained, with muted tones that contribute to the solemn atmosphere of the scene. West uses light and shadow to dramatic effect, focusing attention on the key figures and their emotional states. The painting captures a moment of political intrigue and personal tragedy, reflecting the turbulent history of ancient Sparta.

Artist Biography
Benjamin West
He was born in Springfield, Pennsylvania, in 1738, a Quaker-raised boy from the colonies who became the second president of the Royal Academy in London, holding the post for twenty-eight years. He arrived in England in 1763 after studying in Italy and quickly gained the patronage of George III, serving as the king's historical painter from 1772 to 1801.
He trained a generation of American painters in London, including Gilbert Stuart, Charles Willson Peale, Samuel Morse and John Trumbull. Each returned to America and shaped the new nation's visual culture. West stayed in London and died there in 1820, at eighty-one.
