A minimalist illustration of a lion by Dutch artist Dick Bruna, featuring bold black outlines and a primary colour palette.
This work by Dutch artist and illustrator Dick Bruna captures his signature approach to graphic design. Bruna, who gained international recognition for his minimalist children's books, utilised a strict visual vocabulary to communicate complex ideas through simple forms. His process involved the reduction of subjects to their most basic geometric components, often employing a limited palette of primary colours.
The image features a lion, rendered with bold, black outlines against a solid red background. The mane is composed of uniform, petal-like shapes, while the facial features consist of simple dots and a curved line for the mouth. This economy of line is a hallmark of Bruna's style, which he developed through his work as a graphic designer for his family's publishing house. By stripping away unnecessary detail, he created images that possess immediate clarity and visual impact.
Bruna's technique often involved painting with gouache, which allowed for the flat, opaque colour fields seen here. The white border surrounding the lion serves to separate the subject from the background, a common device in his illustrations to ensure the figure remains distinct. This piece is representative of his mid-century output, where he balanced the rigour of professional graphic design with the playful nature of his subject matter. The work avoids decorative excess, focusing instead on the relationship between shape, colour, and line. It is a clear example of how Bruna applied the principles of modern art, such as those found in the work of Henri Matisse or Piet Mondrian, to the field of illustration. The result is an image that remains accessible while maintaining a high degree of formal discipline.
