Description
A study of late-blooming chrysanthemums from the artist's own garden, rendered with textured brushwork and a focus on natural form.
Gustave Caillebotte painted this study of chrysanthemums during his final years at Petit-Gennevilliers. After moving to this riverside commune in 1881, Caillebotte dedicated much of his time to horticulture. His garden became a primary subject for his later work, reflecting his personal interest in botany and the specific conditions of his own cultivated space. The composition focuses on the dense, vertical growth of the flowers. Caillebotte employs a technique that balances the individual forms of the blooms with the surrounding foliage. The paint application is varied, with thicker impasto used to define the petals, creating a tactile surface that catches the light. The colour palette relies on deep greens, muted earth tones, and the specific hues of the flowers, ranging from white and pale yellow to deep crimson. Unlike his earlier urban scenes, which often utilised rigid perspective and architectural lines, this work demonstrates a shift toward a more fluid, observational approach. The lack of a clear horizon line or distant background forces the viewer to engage directly with the texture and mass of the plants. This approach reflects the artist's immersion in his garden, where the boundaries between the viewer and the subject are minimised. The painting captures a specific moment in the seasonal cycle, documenting the late-blooming chrysanthemums that were a staple of his collection. Through this work, Caillebotte records the results of his gardening efforts, treating the flowers with the same attention to detail he previously applied to his depictions of Parisian life.
