Description
A monochrome print by Pieter de Grebber depicting the biblical encounter between Christ and the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well. The artist's use of line and shading creates a sense of depth and texture.
This monochrome print depicts the biblical encounter between Christ and the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well. The composition is carefully arranged, with Christ seated on a stone structure, holding a flower, and the woman kneeling before him in supplication. A water jug and draped cloth rest on the well's edge, while a verdant background of trees and foliage provides a natural setting. The artist's use of line and shading creates a sense of depth and texture, particularly in the rendering of the figures' garments and the surrounding vegetation. Pieter de Grebber (1600-1652) was a Dutch Golden Age painter known for his history paintings and portraits. He was influenced by Peter Paul Rubens and the French Classicism movement. De Grebber's work often featured religious and mythological subjects, reflecting the artistic and intellectual climate of the time. His style is characterised by its attention to detail, balanced compositions, and use of light and shadow to create dramatic effects. This print exemplifies his ability to convey narrative and emotion through carefully rendered figures and settings.
