A formal military portrait of Christian Edouard Fraser, Second Lieutenant of the 5th Regiment of Dragoons, painted by Charles Howard Hodges.
This portrait by Charles Howard Hodges depicts Christian Edouard Fraser, a second lieutenant in the 5th Regiment of Dragoons. Hodges, a British painter who spent much of his career in the Netherlands, was a sought-after portraitist among the Dutch elite and military officers during the early nineteenth century. His approach to portraiture is characterised by a focus on the sitter's individual features and the precise rendering of military attire.
In this work, Fraser is shown in his formal uniform, which includes a dark blue tunic with red collar detailing and silver epaulettes. The artist pays close attention to the metallic textures of the uniform, from the chain mail attachments on the cross-belt to the brass buckle featuring the numeral five. The sitter is positioned against a neutral, atmospheric background, which directs the viewer's attention to his composed expression and the details of his rank. The lighting is soft, creating gentle transitions across the face and highlighting the texture of the fabric.
Hodges was known for his ability to capture a sense of presence in his subjects. This painting reflects the conventions of military portraiture of the period, where the uniform serves as an indicator of status and professional identity. The brushwork is controlled and precise, consistent with the academic training of the era. The composition is balanced, with the subject turned slightly to the side, providing a clear view of his medals and insignia. This print offers a view into the aesthetic of the early nineteenth-century officer class, documenting both the fashion of the time and the technical skill of the artist.
