Description
A masterpiece of Italian Mannerism, this 1552 altarpiece by Agnolo Bronzino depicts the dramatic liberation of souls from the underworld.
Agnolo Bronzino completed this large-scale altarpiece for the Zanchini Chapel in the Basilica of Santa Croce, Florence. The composition depicts the Harrowing of Hell, a subject drawn from apocryphal tradition where Christ descends into the underworld to liberate the souls of the righteous who died before his crucifixion. Bronzino employs the stylistic hallmarks of the Mannerist period, characterised by elongated figures, complex poses, and a deliberate rejection of the balanced, naturalistic proportions favoured by High Renaissance painters. The central figure of Christ stands in a contrapposto stance, his body illuminated against the dark, cavernous setting. He holds a banner, acting as a vertical anchor for the dense arrangement of figures surrounding him. To the right, Eve is depicted with a porcelain-like complexion, her form rendered with the smooth, sculptural quality typical of Bronzino's portraiture. The figures are tightly packed, creating a sense of claustrophobic tension that is relieved only by the dramatic lighting. The artist includes several contemporary portraits within the crowd, a practice common in Florentine religious commissions of the sixteenth century. The painting is notable for its technical precision and the cool, enamel-like finish of the skin tones, which contrast with the murky, shadowed environment of the underworld. This work remains a primary example of the intellectual and highly stylised approach to religious narrative that defined the Medici court painters during the mid-sixteenth century.
