A fine art print of an illuminated manuscript folio by the Limbourg brothers, depicting Christ as Salvator Mundi within a gothic architectural setting.
This illumination originates from the Belles Heures, a devotional book commissioned by Jean de France, Duc de Berry. The Limbourg brothers, Paul, Herman, and Jean, were active in the early fifteenth century and are recognised for their contribution to the International Gothic style. This specific folio depicts Christ as Salvator Mundi, holding a golden orb, positioned within an architectural setting that suggests a vaulted interior space. The figure of Christ is rendered with a focus on linear clarity and soft modelling, characteristic of the brothers' approach to human form during this period.
The page layout follows the traditional structure of a medieval manuscript, featuring Latin text in a formal gothic script. The illumination is integrated with decorative initials and marginal flourishes, which incorporate organic motifs and gold leaf. The use of gold leaf provides a reflective quality to the page, typical of high-status commissions intended for private prayer. The architectural background, with its rib-vaulted ceiling, demonstrates an interest in spatial depth, a feature that became more pronounced in the later works of the Limbourg brothers, such as the Très Riches Heures.
This print captures the precise application of pigment and the delicate brushwork required for miniature painting on vellum. The composition balances the textual elements with the pictorial narrative, maintaining the harmony expected in a luxury manuscript. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on the contrast between the gold, the architectural greys, and the warm tones of the robes. This work provides a view into the technical standards of early fifteenth-century book production, where the collaboration between scribe and illuminator resulted in a cohesive object of devotion.
