This work by Juan de Flandes, a painter of Flemish origin who became a court artist to Isabella I of Castile, represents a refined example of Early Netherlandish painting. The panel depicts the post-resurrection encounter between Christ and the Virgin Mary. Christ stands on the left, draped in a deep red mantle, while the Virgin kneels in a dark blue habit on the right. The figures are positioned within a sophisticated architectural frame that mimics a stone portal, complete with sculpted figures in niches and ornate Gothic tracery.

The artist employs a high degree of precision in the rendering of textures, from the heavy folds of the garments to the subtle play of light across the tiled floor. Through the open doorway in the background, a distant landscape reveals a secondary scene, showing the three Marys at the tomb. This use of a secondary narrative space is a common device in the period, allowing the artist to connect the primary subject with the broader biblical sequence.

Juan de Flandes is known for his ability to integrate Northern European attention to detail with the stylistic preferences of the Spanish court.
