A portrait by American Impressionist Lilla Cabot Perry, capturing a young girl in a blue kimono against a verdant, textured background.
Lilla Cabot Perry, a central figure in the American Impressionist movement, painted this portrait during her time in Japan. Living in Tokyo between 1898 and 1901, Perry absorbed the aesthetic principles of the region, which she integrated into her own practice. This work captures a young girl adjusting her hair, a gesture that provides a sense of quiet, private observation. The subject wears a blue kimono with a pale yellow trim, creating a colour contrast against the textured, verdant background.
Perry employs a technique that prioritises the play of light and the tactile quality of the paint surface. The brushwork is loose and expressive, particularly in the rendering of the fabric and the surrounding space. By avoiding rigid outlines, she allows the forms to emerge from the atmosphere of the composition. The influence of her time in Giverny, where she worked alongside Claude Monet, is evident in her approach to colour and the soft, diffused illumination of the subject.
This painting reflects the broader interest in Japonisme that occupied many artists of the late nineteenth century. Rather than treating the kimono as a mere costume, Perry focuses on the interaction between the figure and her environment. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the figure echoed by the subtle, rhythmic strokes in the background. The work remains a clear example of how Perry synthesised her academic training with the experimental techniques of Impressionism, resulting in a portrait that feels both immediate and considered. It is a study of form and light, rendered with a sensitivity to the quietude of the moment.
