A 1925 oil painting by John French Sloan depicting a lone rider along the red-hued Chama River in New Mexico.
John French Sloan, a figure associated with the Ashcan School, shifted his focus during the 1920s toward the American Southwest. Chama Running Red, painted in 1925, captures the distinct geological character of New Mexico. The composition features a lone rider on horseback navigating a path beside the Chama River, which is rendered in a deep, earthy red tone. The surrounding cliffs and mesas display a rugged texture, with shadows cast by the bright, high-altitude sun.
Sloan employs a palette dominated by ochre, terracotta, and deep blue, reflecting the specific light conditions of the region. The sky is filled with large, billowing clouds, a common feature in the high desert. Unlike his earlier urban scenes of New York City, this work demonstrates his interest in the vast, open spaces of the West. The brushwork is direct and energetic, showing the influence of his training as an illustrator and his later experimentation with colour theory. The solitary figure provides a sense of scale against the imposing natural formations. This piece documents a period when many American artists sought to define a national identity through the depiction of the Western frontier. The work remains a clear example of Sloan's ability to translate his observational skills into the depiction of dramatic, sun-drenched environments.
