A preparatory ceiling study by Giuseppe Bernardino Bison, featuring an allegorical scene of figures amidst clouds rendered in ink and wash.
Giuseppe Bernardino Bison was a versatile Italian artist known for his decorative schemes and architectural capricci. This drawing functions as a preparatory study for a ceiling fresco, a medium in which Bison excelled throughout his career in Venice and Trieste. The composition is contained within an oval frame, a common format for ceiling panels intended to be viewed from below.
The subject matter presents a classical allegory. A central figure, likely representing a martial hero or Mars, holds a spear and shield, occupying the space amidst swirling clouds. To the right, a female figure gestures towards the heavens, while putti accompany the scene, carrying attributes that suggest the balance between conflict and harmony. The use of brown ink and wash creates a sense of volume and atmospheric depth, typical of the rapid, fluid technique employed by artists when planning large-scale decorative commissions.
Bison's draughtsmanship displays the influence of the Venetian tradition, particularly the light-handed approach of Tiepolo. The figures are rendered with quick, calligraphic strokes that define form without excessive detail. The wash provides the necessary tonal contrast to suggest the three-dimensional quality of the figures against the sky. This work offers a glimpse into the creative process of an artist who moved between the late Baroque traditions and the emerging Neoclassical aesthetic. It captures the energy of a concept in its initial stage, before the rigour of final execution on plaster. The oval format and the upward-looking perspective confirm its intended placement on a ceiling, where the figures would appear to float above the viewer, creating an illusion of space and movement.
