Luca Signorelli completed these ceiling frescoes within the Chapel of San Brizio at Orvieto Cathedral between 1499 and 1502. The work occupies the vaulted ceiling, divided into triangular compartments that frame various groups of figures, including apostles, patriarchs, and prophets. Signorelli, a master of the Tuscan school, demonstrates his command of human anatomy and spatial organisation through these compositions. The figures are arranged with a sense of physical weight and volume, characteristic of his approach to the human form.

The iconography reflects the theological themes of the Last Judgement, which Signorelli explored throughout the chapel.
