A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Robert Nanteuil, depicting Cardinal Richelieu within a laurel wreath frame.
This engraving by Robert Nanteuil depicts Armand-Jean du Plessis, Cardinal Richelieu, the influential French clergyman and statesman. Nanteuil, a master of the portrait print during the seventeenth century, produced this work based on a painting by Philippe de Champaigne. The composition features the Cardinal within a decorative oval frame formed by laurel leaves, a common device in the portraiture of the period to denote status and achievement.
Nanteuil demonstrates technical precision in his handling of the burin. The lines defining the Cardinal's facial features, the texture of his clerical robes, and the intricate shading of the laurel wreath reveal a high level of control. The portrait captures the subject in a three-quarter view, with his gaze directed towards the viewer. The stark contrast between the dark background and the lighter tones of the face and collar creates a sense of physical presence. The inclusion of the cross of the Order of the Holy Spirit suspended from his neck provides a specific detail regarding his rank and affiliations.
As a printmaker to Louis XIV, Nanteuil was responsible for documenting the appearance of the French court and its key figures. This work is representative of the formal portrait style that dominated the era, where the subject is presented with gravity and composure. The engraving process allows for a clarity of detail that complements the formal nature of the subject. The laurel wreath, while decorative, also serves to frame the figure, drawing the eye to the face. This print provides a clear record of the visual culture of seventeenth-century France, reflecting the aesthetic preferences for order and precision in portraiture.
