A dramatic 1859 oil painting by Eugene von Guerard depicting a bushfire at night, contrasting the intense glow of flames with the cool light of the moon.
Eugene von Guerard, an Austrian-born painter who settled in Australia, produced this work in 1859. It captures the dramatic and often destructive nature of the Australian environment. The composition is divided horizontally: the foreground remains in shadow, while the middle ground and horizon are consumed by a massive bushfire. The flames create a wall of light that illuminates the smoke, which billows upwards to dominate the sky.
Von Guerard employs a precise, observational technique typical of his training in the Düsseldorf school. He balances the terrifying power of the fire with the calm, cool light of the moon, which hangs in the upper centre of the canvas. This contrast between the heat of the blaze and the celestial stillness creates a tension that defines the work. The foreground features small, silhouetted figures, providing a sense of scale and human presence against the vast, untamed wilderness.
This painting is a record of the environmental conditions experienced by settlers in the mid-nineteenth century. Von Guerard was known for his meticulous documentation of the Australian terrain, and this piece is no exception. The application of paint is controlled, allowing for the subtle gradation of colours in the smoke and the sharp definition of the trees in the foreground. The work remains a primary example of how European artistic traditions were applied to the unique conditions of the Australian continent during the colonial period.
